I'm only on page 21. The 10 principles of Jeff Bezos. Problem is principle is spelt principal "Principal" #10. Again on the following page. Page 22 "principal" #8. What kind of spell checker is Brad Stone using Can't afford Word? Do they have proof readers at S&S. - or do they rely on AI?That's the kind of detail that really annoys me. No wonder Jeff Bezos wouldn't talk to Mr. Stone. First, let me say that it feels awkward to post a review on Amazon of a book I bought at Amazon, which is all about Amazon. Anyway, I really enjoyed reading this, and think it will become an important addition to the history of this pioneering company. Brad Stone covers the critical successes, and a few failures, of Jeff Bezos and his management team who took this business to the next level during the last 10 years, making it a trillion dollar company. Although Stone was unable to interview Bezos, the founder's vision and management style are reflected on nearly every page, based on Stone's interviews with current and former employees. Bezos' supreme determination to deliver choice, quality, and value to customers is portrayed by Stone as a fanatical desire to win that Attila the Hun would have admired. Stone takes the reader through the development of Alexa, the acquisition of Whole Foods, expansion of the Marketplace, growth of Web Services, creation of a home delivery system, and other innovations. Success did not come easy, and Stone discusses in detail the wide ranging problems Amazon execs had to overcome. On a larger scale, Amazon's success demonstrates some important strengths and weaknesses of capitalism (at least in the US). Stone does discuss antitrust and consumer protection issues, treatment of employees, as well as Amazon's sometimes contentious dealings with local officials about locating new facilities. This book is not a detailed personal biography of Bezos, but Stone does have a chapter near the end about Bezos' recent private life (affair, divorce, etc.) Frankly, I found this distracting from the main focus of the book, the inside view of the business Overall, I think that Stone captures well the story of a company whose motto might have been borrowed from General George Patton: "Audacity, audacity, and audacity".
